Help your child

Parental support plays a huge role in a child's progress. The staff at Joseph Turner are always willing to discuss with parents how they can help their child at home. If you would like any help from your child's teacher please do not hesitate to contact school and teachers will gladly arrange a time to meet with you. If however, you are after a few quick tips on how to help your child at home - please read on ...

  • When looking at the TV papers, find your favourite programme and ask children to work out how long it is in minutes. What time would it finish if it started at 3.55pm?
  • At the shops - when buying a few items ask your child to work out how much they will cost. How much change will I get from £1, £5, £10?
  • In the kitchen, encourage children to help you weigh out ingredients using the scales. Help them to understand the scales. Stop before you have the correct amount - how much more flour do I need to make 400g? etc
  • Number bonds to 20 - call out a number between 0 and 20, what do I add to this number to make 20? You shout 5, your child shouts back 15, you shout 16, your child shouts 4 etc
  • Time tables - these make a huge difference to their maths confidence if they know these off by heart.
  • Spend a short while each night reading with and to your child - ask them questions about what they've just read.
  • Encourage your child to read a range of different factual texts as well as stories.
