The Curriculum

We have recently changed the curriculum to make it as exciting and inspiring as possible for our children. Below is a brief summary of what we will be doing in the first half of the Autumn term.

Foundation Stage - Our topic in Foundation Stage for the first half of the Spring term is ‘Click, Click, Beep, Beep’. During this time the children in Foundation Stage will be looking at the story of ‘Whatever Next!’ Baby Bear from the story will be crash landing his rocket into school and the children will have to explore the ways in which they help him to get home. For example, the children will be using junk to fix Baby Bear’s rocket and testing which materials are waterproof for his helmet. They will also be helping him communicate with Mummy Bear to let her know he’s safe, by writing letters and making telephone calls. Throughout the topic the children will be investigating various forms of ICT, such as flip cameras for recording, cameras to photograph their creations and computer programmes to design their own rocket and space pictures. The children will also be faced with a range of problem solving activities, for instance working out how much food to take to the moon and exploring the best size and shape to make a rocket travel furthest. At the end of the topic will be saying goodbye to Baby Bear with a picnic on the moon.

Year 1 -This half term we will be looking at a range of different fairy tales. We have lots of exciting activities planned including making felt hand puppets, cookery, growing beans, making a gingerbread sweet house, making magic spells, designing a chocolate bar and painting with chocolate. We will be focusing on investigations in Science involving sound and testing our own ideas.

Year 2 - This half term our topic is Fire! Fire!  We will be learning about The Great Fire of London. We will learn about what happened, create a timeline of events and discover important people of that time - Samuel Pepys.  We will be writing diary extracts and newspaper reports.  We will be comparing London in the past to present day, looking at, for example, the different types of buildings and why fire spread so quickly.  As part of our topic we will also be learning about fire safety, materials and forces.

Year 3 - Our topic this term is Alive and Kicking. We will be learning about the importance of a healthy lifestyle including having a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep and staying active. Using our knowledge we will be designing leaflets to explain to others the benefits of staying healthy, eating well and exercising regularly. Freddie Fit will be paying us a visit to help us get more active and teach us about different food groups. We will also be learning all about the human body, how it works and the effects that having a healthy lifestyle have on it.

Year 4 - Our topic in year 4 this term is Tudors. We will be learning about what it was like to live in Tudor times and some of the key events in this period. We will be putting ourselves in the role of  Tudor people which will lead to our Talking Museum exhibition later in the term, called Meet The Tudors. The children are particularly keen to find out about crime and punishment and health and hygeine at the time. We will compare and contrast Tudors with modern life and apply our learning in literacy of how to write instructions and how to use direct speech in writing.

Year 5 - Our next topic in Year 5 is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. During this topic we are going to learn all about environmental issues, sustainability and renewable energy sources.  At home our family project will be to design a home recycling system which will make it easier and more fun for families to recycle at home.  We will be planning, designing and making our own miniature green house from recycled / reused materials.  These mini greenhouses are the prototype for our large scale project – a pop bottle greenhouse, which we are hoping to build on the Key Stage Two playground at the end of the half term.  We will then have a ready-made green house for our next topic – Staying Alive.  We are also looking forward to leading ‘Green Day’ for the whole school – this will let us put into practise everything we have learnt. So can you please save ALL your 2litre pop bottles and send them into school.  Thank you.

Year 6 - We are beginning our hard work and preparations for our End of Key Stage SATs in the Summer Term.
