Support for Parents
-
We understand that RSHE - and particularly the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum - can sometimes raise tricky or sensitive questions. To support you in having calm, confident conversations at home, Jigsaw have created the parent guides below. These resources are designed to help you talk with your child about these important and often challenging topics in a way that feels comfortable and age‑appropriate.

Opting-out of Non-statutory sex education lessons

Jigsaw PSHE (2026 update): what parents can opt out of (Context for 2026)
Under the 2026 Jigsaw lessons, parents do not have the right to withdraw children from:
- Relationships Education
- Families, friendships, respect and kindness
- Challenging stereotypes and discrimination
- Online relationships and safety
- Safeguarding and trusted adults
- Correct naming of body parts (including genitals, for safeguarding)
-
These remain statutory from Reception onwards
2) Health Education, including puberty In the 2026 Jigsaw update. Puberty content is still classed as Health Education, not sex education, which Includes:
- Physical and emotional changes
- Menstruation
-
Parents cannot opt out of these lessons in any year group.
National Curriculum Science - Life cycles
- Basic human reproduction (age‑appropriate)
-
Anything required by the Science curriculum remains non‑withdrawable
❌ What parents can opt out of (2026 Jigsaw materials)
Opt‑out applies only to non‑statutory sex education. In the updated 2026 Jigsaw “Changing Me” unit, parents may still request withdrawal only from lessons that go beyond science and health, i.e. explicit human reproduction. These lessons include: - Year 5 - Conception (including IVF)
- Year 6 - Conception to birth
-
These lessons explicitly explain sexual intercourse or conception methods, which the DfE continues to define as sex education rather than health education.
- Wet dreams
- Personal hygiene
- Emotional wellbeing and mental health
