Spring 2

w.b. 24.02.2025

This week we looked at the book ‘The great pet sale’. We shared photographs of the pets we have at home and talked about how to care for them. Some of the activities we joined in with included building a home for a pet using construction, using imaginative play when looking after animals in our ‘Vets’ role play, and finding out information from a selection of non-fiction books. During exploration time outside, we set up an agility course for dogs, matching number to quantity when feeding a toy dog bones, and had lots of fun using our selection of dressing up clothes to take on a role in play alongside friends.

We had a very busy week this week! The beginning of the week we learnt all about pancake day (Shrove Tuesday) and shared the book ‘Mr Wolf’s pancakes’. We watched a video about how to make pancakes, and then talked about the ingredients used and the method of how they were made. Later on in the week we then had our own pancake and chose a topping. They tasted delicious!
Thursday was ‘World book day’ and we came to school wearing wonderful costumes. We joined in with lots of fun activities including listening to stories read by different members of staff in Reception, designed a book cover, and made a stick puppet of our favourite character from a story.

This week we have been learning all about jungle animals and shared the story ‘Rumble in the jungle’. Some of the activities this week included using junk materials to create a jungle animal, using weighing scales to compare the weight of animals and using language such as ‘heaviest’ and ‘lightest’, and using instruments and masks to make our own jungle animal music. Outside we practised our balancing skills using the stilts, used different containers in the sand and water to talk about ‘full’ and ‘empty’, and also enjoyed getting messy in the mud kitchen!

Visit from the Animal Lady

We were lucky enough to have a visit from the ‘Animal lady’. She told us lots of fun facts and information about the animals she brought with her. Some of the animals we met included a snake named ‘Kellogg’, a Guinea pig named ‘Phil’, a bearded dragon named ‘Thelma’, a cockroach called ‘Colin’ and a Gecko called ‘Bill’. All of the children were very gentle with the animals and we all had a lovely time meeting them.

This week we learned all about dinosaurs. Our key text was ‘Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs’. We joined in with lots of fun activities over the week including following a step-by-step video to draw our own Tyrannosaurus rex, using different tools to release small dinosaurs that had been frozen in sand and ice, and sorting dinosaurs into categories by comparing how many legs they have and other features. On Friday it was ‘Comic Relief’ so we celebrated Red Nose Day by wearing something red, joining in with themed activities, and then decorating and eating a red nosed biscuit!

We had lots of fun this week when sharing the story ‘Dirty Bertie’. During the week we talked about how we stay healthy and keep our bodies clean. Some of the activities included making our own toothbrush with paper and a lollipop stick, sorting ‘healthy’ and ‘treat’ foods, ordering worms from the shortest to the longest, practising brushing teeth, and we even had our own health centre role play where we could get our eyesight checked.
Outdoor activities included travelling in different ways around an obstacle course, using construction to build a safe home to live in, and sequencing pictures of our daily routine.

Everything we learnt this week we then used to help us put together our very first assembly!
