Intent

At Joseph Turner Primary School, we are committed to providing an ‘arts rich curriculum’ for our pupils. As stated in the National Curriculum our bespoke art curriculum sets out to engage, challenge and inspire. We believe in fostering a love of art in children that will contribute to the quality of their lives, both within and beyond school, enabling them to be the very best they can be. At Joseph Turner, our broad art curriculum will enable our pupils to develop knowledge of a range of culturally diverse artists and will allow them to develop visual literacy. Our teaching will also allow pupils to think critically and to evaluate their own work and that of others, thus developing a specialist vocabulary.  Children are taught the knowledge, skills and techniques that will enable them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Each project in art links to the relevant topic theme for that term and is taught during the same term as that topic. Each art scheme of work has one or more key artwork(s) that the children discuss and learn about. As they move further up the school they use mind mapping and annotation to write about art. The key artworks include a range of genres, styles and culturally and ethnically diverse artwork and artists. The key artworks inspire the children’s practical work, through the concept, medium or subject matter. All schemes of work include one or more skill such as; drawing, painting, collage, sculpture or printing. Progress in these skills is built in across all year groups and skills and media are often revisited as the children move up the school. Children produce work in their sketchbooks where they explore and experiment with skills and techniques, develop and plan their ideas and respond to the work of other artists and crafts people. They produce outcomes that go on display around the school.

Through our curriculum, based upon a progression of skills and in line with the National Curriculum Programmes of Study, we will provide opportunities for our pupils to:

· use a variety of materials, tools and techniques safely, experimentally and with increasing confidence

· develop a range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space (Key Stage One)

· improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials (Key Stage Two)

· express their own responses, feelings and ideas using visual, tactile, verbal and written means where appropriate

· recognise the contribution that art makes to learning in other subjects and aspects such as English, mathematics and the spiritual and moral dimensions

· develop an increasing knowledge and understanding of the contribution of artists, designers and craft makers to cultures past and present

· develop aesthetic sensibilities so that they can respond sensitively and thoughtfully

· develop their own unique and personal ideas. 

Implementation

At Joseph Turner Primary School, we pride ourselves on the consistent approach to teaching and learning that can be observed across all phases of school. This is achieved through our commitment to and quality first teaching on a daily basis. Expectations of staff and pupils are high, resulting in good or outstanding progress in all phases. There is a universal understanding of what outstanding teaching, learning and assessment should entail. These strategies are consistently used throughout school and it is the expectation of leadership that all lessons will include a variety of these to enable learners to reach their full potential. Active learning is essential in all aspects of the lesson. All staff use the same terminology so that learners develop a knowledge and understanding of the different ways they learn. At Joseph Turner, we believe outstanding teaching, learning and assessment must include the following:

In each term, each year group in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two has an artist or genre of art to study, linked to the term’s topic.

During the unit, teaching and learning includes:

· introduction to the artist/genre

· analysis (written and verbal) of examples of the artist’s work

· demonstration and exploration of techniques used by the artist/genre

· development of ideas in a sketchbook

· a final piece of artwork

· evaluation

Final pieces are displayed in year group areas of the corridor or are compiled (photographs if large scale or 3D) in individual A3 art portfolio books, which will follow pupils through school. Each pupil will have a sketchbook and these are used to:

 · collect and analyse examples of art

· sketch and record observations

· practise techniques using a variety of media

· develop and evaluate their own ideas, leading to a final piece

Pupils are encouraged to take ownership and pride in their sketchbooks. Final pieces of artwork should be compiled in pupils’ portfolio books.

Impact

At Joseph Turner Primary, our art curriculum allows pupils to express themselves and connect with the wider world. As well as developing creativity and a love of art, the skills they learn can be transferred to other areas such as language development and visual learning. By the end of Key Stage Two, our pupils will have knowledge and understanding of a range of great artists and genres of art. When creating art, they will develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. Pupils should achieve age-related expectations at the end of their cohort year.

Cultural Capital
At Joseph Turner Primary School, children benefit from a flexible curriculum that builds on what they understand and know already. We believe that exposure, not only to culture but also to situations in which the children might not have previous experiences of, is of paramount importance to their ongoing successes. In Art we widen the children’s cultural capital by inviting artists in to school to complete workshops and create artwork with each year group to immerse in an educational visit linking with out topics. We showcase the children’s artwork within the art area for all to see and celebrate. Children have had the opportunity to visit local art galleries which gave an insight into carers children may be able to take within this subject.
