Equality Statement

Joseph Turner Primary complies with the Equality Act 2010. A summary of the key areas we adhere to are given below. The full documentation can be found on the DfE website. See link at bottom of page.

 

Under the Act, the school is expected to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty.

 

This requires us to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity between different groups
  • Foster good relations between different groups
  •  

As a public organisation, we are required to:

  • Publish information to show compliance with the Equality Duty.  This is done via our Fairness for All policy
  • Publish Equality Objectives which are specific and measurable
  •  

Our Equality policy is in line with national guidance and contains information about how the school complies with the Public Sector Equality Duty.  We also give guidance to staff and outside visitors on our approach to promoting equality.

 

Equality Act 2010

 

The Act makes it unlawful for the responsible body of a school to discriminate against, harass or victimise a pupil or potential pupil:

 

  •  in relation to admissions,
  •  in the way it provides education for pupils,
  •  in the way it provides pupils access to any benefit, facility or service, or
  •  by excluding a pupil or subjecting them to any other detriment.

 

It is unlawful for a school to discriminate against a pupil or prospective pupil by treating them less favourably because of their:

 

  • sex
  • race
  • disability
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • gender reassignment
  • pregnancy or maternity

Equality Objectives 2022-2023

 

OVERVIEW

Joseph Turner Primary School will promote equal opportunity and will not tolerate inequality in any area of the school’s life or work. All will be treated equally and given equal access to the curriculum and life of the school. All will have equal opportunity to benefit from all that we offer. Our intention is to develop an ethos in which all will thrive. Diversity and differences will be valued and respected by all and they will contribute to the richness of our school life and learning.

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. To ensure that all learners have equal access to a rich, broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.
  2. To ensure that teaching and learning promotes equality, celebrates diversity and promotes community cohesion.
  3. To ensure that no-one is unfairly or illegally disadvantaged as a consequence of their gender, colour, race, age, ethnic or national origin, disability or religious beliefs.
  4. To promote mental health and well-being in children with protected characteristics.
  5. To narrow the gap in attendance for pupils with protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act, by fostering good relationships with parents and carers and seeking to understand the barriers to good attendance.
  6. To ensure that learners and parents are fully involved in the provision made by the school.

 

STRATEGIES

  1. Monitoring, evaluation and review carried out by the Leadership Team will ensure that procedures and practices within the school reflect the objectives of this policy.
  2. Parents will be involved and consulted about the provision being offered by the school.
  3. Teachers will ensure that their planning, teaching and learning takes account of this policy and ensures that equity underpins all their work.
  4. The diversity within our school and the wider community will be viewed positively by all and this diversity will be recognised as a rich resource for teaching, learning and the curriculum.
  5. INSET opportunities will be provided for staff, to raise awareness and provide practical examples of suitable curricular materials.
  6. Active contributions will be sought of parents and others to enrich teaching, learning and the curriculum.
  7. The positive achievements of all pupils will be celebrated and recognised.
